In addition, within a metapopulation, the creation or restoration of additional, discrete sites may buffer the whole population against the effects of localised events or demographic stochasticity (Hanski & Gyllenberg, 1993). Within a metapopulation, there may be both source populations and sink populations (Pulliam, 1988).

Levins' metapopulation model was the first model of population dynamics for the study of population processes in a heterogeneous environment (Fahrig, 2007; Levins, 1969).

I develop models of metapopulation dynamics that describe changes in the numbers of individuals within patches.

Metapopulation studies have important conceptual links with the equilibrium theory of island biogeography and with studies on the dynamics of species living in patchy environments. Metapopulation ideas play an increasingly important role in landscape ecology and conservation biology.

Such a collection of populations and its dynamics is called metapopulation dynamics. Each local habitat in a metapopulation is referred as subpopulations. Levins Model: The concept of metapopulation was introduced by Richard Levins (an American ecologist) in 1969.

Metapopulation growth, in terms of the number of adults in the metapopulation (λ m) was mainly determined by local population processes, whereas change in patch occupancy (λ o) reflected the dispersal mode combined with seed Metapopulation dynamics are estimated in terms of wetlandscape occupancy, Ω(t), which identifies the temporal dynamics of the fraction of patches that are occupied by a focal species.

A metapopulation consists of a group of spatially separated populations of the same species which interact at some level.

Metapopulation dynamics

Source-sink metapopulation dynamics WILD3810: Plant and animal populations In this lab, you will continue to learn about the dynamics of multiple interacting populations. Specifically, you will explore the dynamics of a source-sink metapopulation and how these dynamics influence management decisions. This paper describes a novel approach to modelling of metapopulation dynamics. The model is constructed as a generalized incidence function, which describes how the fraction of occupied habitat patches depends on patch areas and isolations. The model may be fitted to presence/absence data from a metapopulation at a dynamic equilibrium between extinctions and colonizations.

The study aim is to increase the understanding of the metapopulation dynamics of sessile species with slow colonization–extinction rates that depend on the dynamics of their patches. The approach is fitting a modified and extended Bayesian version of the IFM for dynamic landscapes ( Verheyen et al.

The study aim is to increase the understanding of the metapopulation dynamics of sessile species with slow colonization–extinction rates that depend on the dynamics of their patches. The approach is fitting a modified and extended Bayesian version of the IFM for dynamic landscapes ( Verheyen et al. 2004 ) using snapshot data on a set of epiphytic lichens.
